About NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst
For almost 200 years, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst has been a sought-after destination for care in New York City. As a public, community-funded hospital, it is Elmhurst’s mission to ensure that all those in need receive quality care and highly personalized attention, regardless of their ability to pay. Today, Elmhurst receives more than one million patient visits each year, in one of the most ethnically diverse, linguistically diverse, and population-dense communities in the United States. Almost half of our neighbors were born in another country, and we offer services to patients who speak more than 120 languages.
In 2020, our corner of Queens became known as the epicenter within the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the community served by Elmhurst, unlike few other cities in the United States. Undaunted, our dedicated staff of more than 6,000 frontline professionals pulled together to pioneer life-saving procedures, including the first antigen testing. Today we are stronger, confident in our ability to meet any challenge, and always preparing for what lies ahead. In 2024, U.S. News included NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst in its inaugural list of the "50 Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access."

Who We Serve
The second-oldest hospital in the NYC Health + Hospitals network, Elmhurst is located in one of the most ethnically, linguistically diverse, and population-dense communities in the United States, where almost half of our neighbors were born in another country. As a nationally-recognized hospital, we provide cutting-edge healthcare to all who seek our services each year, regardless of their ability to pay.
Almost 40% of Elmhurst’s patients are uninsured; we treat the highest percentage of uninsured individuals in New York City’s Health + Hospitals network of public hospitals. The majority of our patients come from Queens County, where according to the 2020 US census, 2.4 million people live, and of whom: 15.4% live in poverty; 56.5% speak a language other than English at home; 15.9% under age 65 are without health insurance; 47.8% are foreign born (2010-2014).
